Keeping Warm and Well This Winter
Why winter calls for extra precautions
Tips for staying warm and well
Keep Your Home Warm
- Aim to keep your home at a comfortable temperature of 18-21 degrees. To save money, turn off the radiators in rooms that you are less likely to go in and close the door.
- Close windows and curtains and keep doors closed to prevent drafts.
- Use draught excluders and check windows for gaps.
Dress Comfortably
- Several thin layers of clothing can help trap heat better than one thick layer.
- Warm socks and slippers as well as using blankets can help when indoors.
Eat Well and Stay Hydrated
- Regular hot meals and hot drinks can help maintain your body’s temperature.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
Stay Active
- Even when indoors, try to stay as active as possible to help boost your blood circulation.
- Simple stretching or walking every hour can have a great benefit.
For extra warmth
- Electric blankets and hot water bottles are helpful with keeping you warm and at a low cost. However, with this please ensure both are used safely and electric blankets are turned off overnight.
Winter fuel payment
- The UK Government will be issuing a Winter Fuel Payment to those born before 22nd September 1959. To find out if you’re eligible please visit https://www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment.
